In the Trenches (2010)

Sited in a strangely narrow, dark and dead-ended space in the basement of a decommissioned school, “In the Trenches” imagines an intense, archaic lesson in which the willing and innocent voice of a girl learning to sing “The Maple Leaf Forever” was contrasted with the impossible demands made by her interruptive, relentless male teacher. This “music lesson” examines Canadian colonial history and the education of girls.

Repeated 12 minute audio-score, light, soil. 2010. Part of the exhibition Art School (dismissed), curated and produced by the artist
